Among the special departments of KhSAC , the department of directing occupies one of the main places. She wrote bright pages in the history of KSBI and KSDI, and its graduates are known both in Ukraine and abroad. These are talented theater directors and actors, heads of amateur and professional theater groups, directors of theatrical events, specialists in radio and television. The department was created in 1959 as part of KSBI to train qualified specialists who would lead amateur theater groups and folk theaters.

In 1999-2000 the department of Directing had an honorable and responsible mission - to lay the foundations of new specializations in the specialty "Theater Art": this is "Directing the Drama Theater", "Directing the Stage and Mass Festivals", "Acting Art of Theater and Cinema". The search for new progressive methods of teaching special tasks in the new specialty is marked by work at the department of theater directors, actors, artists and other specialists in the field of stage art, the opening of new specializations made it possible to apply an unconventional approach to teaching the basic principles of acting and directing. The essence of this technique is to recruit students in the acting and directing areas for their further joint training at the Faculty of Theater Arts of KhSAC.

The complex process of educating future stage directors and mass holidays was carried out in these years by honored artists of Ukraine S. I. Gordiev, F. A. Chemerovsky, laureates of international theater festivals and reviews R. G. Nabokov, V. A. Bugayova, M. V. Ostrovska; directors and actors of the drama theater - Professor V. I. Tsvetkov, honored artists of Ukraine, associate professors I. A. Boris and M. A. Entin and along with them - teachers who successfully combined creative work in the theater with pedagogical - honored artist of Ukraine Yu. B. Starchenko, honored artists of Ukraine G. M. Plokhotnyuk, A. I. Kubantsev, V. T. Tkachenko, E. F. Plaksin, honored artist of Moldova A. V. Filippova and people's artist of Ukraine O. P. Vasiliev, artists O. V. Stetsenko, S. A. Berezhko, L. V. Lunina.

An important place in the daily life of the department of directing belonged to scientific and methodological work. With the active participation of leading teachers, textbooks, programs, curricula necessary in the activities of universities of culture and arts were created. So, in 1997 the author's team consisting of Professor V. I. Tsvetkova, associate professors S. I. Gordeev and I. A. Boris published the textbook "The Skill of the Director. Heuristic tasks for managing the creative process", in 1998. Associate professor V. K. Guzhva - textbook "Lessons of directing", in 2000 professor V. I. Tsvetkov - textbook and lecture summary "Fundamentals classical directing". In the same year, the materials of the international conference "Valentina Chistyakova - actress of the Kurbas school" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding actress were published under the editorship of S. I. Gordeev and I. P. Zborovets.

One of the most important features of the renewal in the life of the department of directing was the opening of in 1999-2000 permanent stationary educational theater. Already in the first year of its existence, they started talking about it in the city. In the repertoire poster of the educational theater of the first theatrical season (2000-2001), stage productions of such performances as: "Love Dance" by A. Schnitzler, "Landscape" by G. Pinter, "Sylvia" by A. Gurney, "Duel" by N. Tanskaya, "Good Night, Mom" by M. Norman, "How Goose Died" by M. Kulish (works by students of the director's workshop M. A. Entina); "I - (Romance)" by M. Khvylyov, "Loneliness" by F. Kafka, "Obsessed" by Lesya Ukrainka, "Transformation" by F. Kafka, "Pit" by O. Kuprin (works by students of I. A. Boris and G. M. Plokhotnyuk); "Persian Lilac" by M. Kalyad, "Joy" by D. Golsworthy, "Karol" by S. Mrozhek (creative works of pupils of V. V. Romanchuk), "Overcoat" by M. Gogol, "Mirror" (works of students of the director's workshop S. I. Gordeev). the diverse and interesting repertoire of the educational theater attracted the attention of not only students of Kharkiv universities, but also representatives of the mass media, who highly appreciated the performances in articles-reviews in the local press.

The beginning of the newest stage of the department's development is connected with the opening, by order of the KhSAC administration, in 2009 of graduate school in the specialty "Theater Art". It was this that made it possible to make wider use of the scientific potential of the faculty of the department for the preparation and defense of dissertation research and raising the professional level. So, in 2013 under the guidance of Doctor of Cultural Studies, Professor of the Department of Directing A. A. Kikot were trained in graduate school and successfully defended their dissertations by senior teachers V. A. Bugayova and R. G. Nabokov. In addition to the teachers of the department of directing, graduate students in the specialty "Theater Art" began to study, applicants for other departments of KhSAC and other universities of Kharkov and art institutions of Ukraine. For the period from 2010-2015. Teachers and graduate students published more than 150 scientific articles, a textbook on the organization and conduct of mass holidays and performances (2010, author - F. A. Chemerovsky ), the monograph "Semiosis of the Ukrainian costume: gender representations" (2010, author - Prof. A. A. Kikot ), curricula and methodological materials according to the special instructions of the department (2010-2015), Together with the staff of the library of KhSAK prof. S. I. Gordeev prepared and published a bibliographic index "The Creative Heritage of Les Kurbas in the 21st Century" (2012), dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding artist of the Ukrainian scene. In 2012, teachers of the Department of Directing together with other art institutions of Kharkiv took part in the organization and holding of the International Scientific Conference "Les Kurbas in the context of world and national culture", based on the materials of which a collection of art works was published. The participants of this conference were not only scientists of Kharkov, but also specialists from other cities of the country, with whom the department maintains strong creative ties. These are Ukrainian institutions of higher education, which have creative departments (Ternopil National Pedagogical University named after V. Gnatyuk, Poltava National Pedagogical University named after V. Korolenko, Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts).

A special page in the creative life of the department of directing was the participation of teachers in city events dedicated to the Euro 2012 World Cup. The directors of the festive celebrations were Honored Artist of Ukraine O. O. Nastachenko - director of "Pre-match Єvro-2012 ceremony" and S. I Gordiev, who prepared a performance within the framework of the Ceremony "opening of the fan zone" Єvro-2012 "of the student theater "Academy" of KhSAC with a theatrical program for Kharkiv citizens and guests of Kharkiv, held on Freedom Square. To this it should be added that O. O. Nastachenko was instructed to stage the dance show "MAIDAN'S," which was held with great success in Kyiv, his broadcast on the Inter channel was seen by many residents of Ukraine.

In 2012 the best graduates-masters of KhSAC were involved in teaching at the department, who graduated from the academy with a degree in Theater Art: O. O. Buvalets, O. A. Apchel, O. Yu. Lachko. Along with experienced masters, they not only began to teach professional disciplines, but also continued to improve their professional level, studying in graduate school in the specialty "Theater Art", At the same time, young teachers, together with students, took an active part in the productions of city, regional, district holidays, theatrical concerts and other artistic events, in the work of the educational theater of the KhSAC.

The main direction of the scientific activity of the Department of Directing in 2014-2020 was the development of theoretical and practical issues in theatrical art on two scientific topics: "The problem of methodological support for the training of directors in the conditions of cultural universities" and "The formation and development of pedagogical principles of the theater school Les Kurbas".

In the period 2016-2019 the department of Directing took part in the staging, organization and holding of more than twenty city, regional holidays and theatrical shows at the request of the Main Directorate of Education and Science and the Kharkov Regional State Administration, the administration and the dean's office of KhSAC. The most significant were the productions of the Award Ceremony for the winners and graduates of the annual regional competition "Higher School of the Kharkiv Region - the Best Names" (directed by S. I. Gordiev, 2018); city folklore festival "Opening of the Slobozhansky Fair" (director - O. A. Nastachenko, 2016-2018); celebrations for the holiday "Day of the National Flag of Ukraine" (director - V. A. Bugayova, 2018); participation in the organization of the exhibition in Kurbas in Kharkov in the Ermilov Center, during which a presentation of books from the personal library of Les Kurbas was held (from the archive of S. I. Gordiev, 2018).

In 2018 and 2021 significantly expanded the geography of art institutions, on the basis of which internships and advanced training of teachers of the department took place. These are concert and entertainment organizations and theaters of Kharkov, with which creative cooperation has been established: Kharkov Academic Ukrainian Theater named after T. G. Shevchenko, Kharkov National Opera and Ballet Theater named after M. Lysenko, Kharkov Academic Theater of Musical Comedy, as well as Kharkov National University of Arts named after I. Kotlyarevsky, in which in 2021 and 2024 all teachers were trained at the Department of Acting and Directing Drama Theater.

In 2019, held an anniversary evening dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Department of Directing, at which graduates and the theater community of Kharkov were invited (director - R. G. Nabokov). The outlined achievements of the 60-year period of artistic activity of the department reflected only part of the great work and efforts invested in the development of the spiritual and artistic education of the applicants.

In the same year, the department became the organizer and director of a gala evening dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the KhSAC (director of the holiday - O. O. Nastachenko). During the celebrations, the rector, professor V. M. Sheiko, emphasized that the achievements of the academy are an important practical basis for the implementation of new creative projects on the path of professional growth of the team, for solving extremely important tasks in the field of Ukrainian national culture and education. For many years of conscientious work, high professionalism and on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the founding of KhSAC, the teachers of the Department of Directing were awarded with certificates of honor and gratitude of the regional state administration, the interregional department of NSTSU, professor S. I. Gordiev - was awarded the honorary diploma of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Today, the department of directing is known in Ukraine as a participant and organizer of scientific conferences, seminars. So, the teachers of the department took part in the international holiday "National Sorochinsky Fair" in the work of the expert council of the All-Ukrainian festival of folk art "Yarmarinka" and in the international scientific and proctic conference "Fair movement in Ukraine: history, traditions, cultural practice" (2021), in the organization of the III All-Ukrainian scientific conference" Actual discourses of pop art: traditions and European integration" (Kyiv, April 21, 2023), IV All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference" Actual discourses of pop art: traditions and European integration" (Kyiv, April 19, 2024) and the II International Scientific and Practical Conference" Art in Nonlinear Space "(Ternopil, 19-20 Oct. 2023, TNPU named after V. Hnatiuk).

Scientists of the department deservedly entered the circle of researchers who thoroughly study the history of Ukrainian theater, theory and methodology of theater pedagogy. Their works are gladly published in professional and art criticism publications.

In the years 2020-2021 the department became the organizer of the regional seminar on mass forms of stage art "Author's directing" (from the experience of staging theatrical shows of teachers of the department of directing KhSAC). The participants of the seminar were artistic directors of creative groups, organizers of cultural events, directors of club-type cultural institutions of the Kharkov region.

In March 2022, in connection with the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, on behalf of the KhSAC administration, the teachers of the department of directing, together with their students, initiated the creation of art projects and artistic programs of a patriotic direction. So, on the initiative of the future director, applicant for the 1 course Daria Maltseva, a charity concert "Come Back Alive" was organized and held in the Shariv Club (Kharkiv region), in which amateur art groups and solo performers took part. Distinguished guests were invited to the event - fighters of the 202nd brigade; in October 2022, at the initiative of art lecturer M. Ostrovska and associate professor R. Nabokov, a presentation of thematic online projects of national orientation on the art art platform "Indestructible" was held, the purpose of which was to affirm the idea of the indestructibility of the spirit of the Ukrainian people. The events were attended by teachers, applicants for education, future applicants, invited guests. The continuation of this theme was the creative action "The Art of the Indestructible", which took place in August 2023 at the KhSAC. It was intended to show and reveal the character of the Invincible Ukrainian people, the nation, and to convey the values for which we are fighting for our common Victory! (director - Associate Professor R. G. Nabokov); in April 2024, the online art project "Wave 19.86", dedicated to the 38th anniversary of the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (director - teacher I. Sikalov); in May 2024, the online video project "Remember. We win", dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945 (director - associate professor R. G. Nabokov).

Rich in the cultural and educational life of the department were 2022-2024. It was at this time that applicants under the guidance of teachers took an active part, as directors and performers of creative shows of practical works. So, the most interesting event was the online show of variety shows from the applicants of the 2nd year, the group of 1M of the OPP "Directing Shows and Art Projects", in which various genre performances were presented: dance, acrobatic tricks, vocal numbers and theatrical performances.

An integral part of the formation and formation of future professionals in the organization and conduct of full-scale mass theatrical events were the meetings of applicants with stakeholders, which are constantly conducted by the teachers of the department. In 2024 meetings were held with graduates of KhSAC: with the director of the creative group FILLOSOFIA O. Logvinova, who revealed the topic "How to create projects in Ukraine that win world prizes" (April 2024) and the leader and director of the Kharkiv Independent Theatre "057" O. Blinkova, who presented the theme "Directing as a business. Is this possible?" The relevance of these meetings is to enable future directors to see the prospect of entering an independent creative life after graduating from the academy and receiving a professional diploma.

The department of directing has been functioning for 65 years. During this period, its teachers carried out more than 60 graduates of specialists full-time and part-time forms of education. Since the training of specialists at the department of directing was effective, her experience is used in the educational process of universities, colleges of culture and arts in many regions of Ukraine, where graduates of KhSAC successfully work as teachers.
