It is with deep sorrow and profound grief that the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture pays its heartfelt tribute to the late Zubeen Garg, the legendary singer, composer, actor, and cultural icon of state Assam and India, who passed away on 19th September 2025 in Singapore. His departure has left an irreparable void in the cultural, artistic, and humanitarian landscape of our nation.
Born as Zubeen Borthakur on 18th November 1972 in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen made Assam - especially Jorhat - his home and the soil where his creativity found deep roots. Over the decades, he evolved into one of the most versatile voices of India: a singer, composer, lyricist, actor, director, and humanitarian. A true musical polymath, he mastered more than a dozen instruments and sang in over forty languages and dialects, carrying the essence of Assamese culture to the global stage while uniting diverse communities across India. His Assamese songs remain immortal treasures, while his Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” won him nationwide fame.
But Zubeen was more than an entertainer. He was a man of conscience - addressing corruption and injustice through his films, and standing by humanitarian causes. His fearless dedication to truth and integrity set him apart as not only a cultural icon but also a social reformer.
In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) by the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya in 2024, among many other accolades.
Zubeen Garg was the soul of Assam’s cultural identity - a voice that expressed the stories, sorrows, and aspirations of his people. He gave recognition to Assamese music and culture at the national and international level. By singing across languages and genres, he became a bridge connecting Assam with the rest of India and beyond. His journey inspired young artists from the North East to dream big while staying rooted in their heritage. He reminded us that art is not only for entertainment but also for awakening society. So profound was the love for him that his death itself created history, with over one million mourners coming together - earning a place in the Limca Book of Records. This speaks to the depth of connection he built with the people.
To his family, we extend our deepest sympathies. Your grief is immense, but it is also shared by millions across Assam, the North East, and the nation. May the outpouring of love and respect be a source of comfort in this difficult time.
Let us remember Zubeen with gratitude - for his music, his courage, his compassion, and his unifying spirit. Though his voice has fallen silent, his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Assam has lost one of its greatest sons. India has lost a rare gem. The world has lost a voice that cannot be replaced. Yet, Zubeen’s spirit lives on—in his songs, in his ideals, and in the millions of lives he touched. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
